March 8, 2010 – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse is excited to announce a $6,789 grant from the Verizon Foundation, a philanthropic entity of Verizon Communications, for the Clubs’ Power Hour Programs.

Power Hour is a comprehensive literacy program available to all Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse members ages 6 to 12 years of age. Power Hour provides youth with the support, resources and guidance necessary to improve their literacy skills and perform better in school. The Power Hour program is implemented in the Clubs with a teacher providing daily instruction. Power Hour enables each Club to provide extra educational support and focused assistance to at-risk members and those in need of motivation and direction. With the proper guidance and support, every Club member has the opportunity to be successful in school.

The Verizon Foundation has been a long-term partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse and the Power Hour program. The Foundation support has enabled the Clubs to continue to expand the impact of the program to reach more youth. Funding from the Verizon Foundation will be utilized to support the continued implementation of the Power Hour program at all of the Syracuse Club locations. Over 150 youth at Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Syracuse currently participate in the Power Hour program.
